Microsoft is discontinuing its personal AI chatbot efforts to focus exclusively on enterprise solutions. The company is merging its consumer Copilot version into its workplace product suite, effectively ceding the personal assistant market to competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Meta.

The updated Copilot integrates full versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. New features include Home for task management, Code for application development, and Autopilot for autonomous agents that monitor email and Teams channels. These agents operate within the Microsoft 365 cloud environment.

Currently, fewer than 7% of Microsoft’s 450 million commercial seats utilize a paid Copilot license. The company plans to bill for specific agent functions based on usage, shifting its strategy to capture enterprise budgets rather than consumer attention.

Microsoft recently reorganized its financial reporting, creating an Agents and Infra segment. Under this structure, Microsoft 365 cloud revenue reached $100.3 billion in fiscal 2026, marking a 19% increase. GitHub cloud revenue has also been moved into the Microsoft 365 category.

The company faces significant competition for enterprise AI spending. Data from Menlo Ventures indicates that Anthropic held a 40% share of enterprise large language model usage at the end of 2025, followed by OpenAI at 27% and Google at 21%.

The Home and Code features will be available to early-access customers in the coming weeks, while Autopilot enters private preview at the end of September. Microsoft will provide further updates at the Ignite conference, scheduled for November 17–20 in San Francisco.
