Microsoft has launched a new division called Xbox Labs to investigate the impact of AI-driven game modding, decompilation, and recompilation. The group consists of engineers, scientists, and game developers tasked with turning emerging concepts into practical tools for players and creators.

CEO Asha Sharma noted that the initiative aims to explore how AI agents can assist in writing, running, and testing software. The company highlighted that users spend over 72 billion hours annually playing Xbox games, which is approximately five times the global time spent on coding.

The formation of Xbox Labs follows recent community experiments where games were ported to Apple Silicon or browsers using WebAssembly and WebGPU. Microsoft plans to develop these projects openly and share its findings and tools with the broader gaming industry.

While the company embraces these technological shifts, it maintains its commitment to existing business priorities and intellectual property stewardship. Microsoft has not yet provided a formal stance on the unauthorized use of its IP in community-led game modifications.
