Microsoft has launched the Driver Quality Initiative (DQI) to improve the stability and reliability of the Windows ecosystem. The framework focuses on driver architecture, security, lifecycle management, and performance metrics, requiring collaboration between Microsoft and its hardware partners.

Intel is the first partner to adopt these standards. Its GPU driver, version 32.0.101.9034 released in October 2026, now supports Windows 11 26H2. The company intends to integrate its Arc graphics drivers into the DQI framework in future updates.

The initiative addresses the risks associated with kernel-mode drivers, which can cause system-wide crashes. Microsoft encourages developers to transition to user-mode drivers or utilize class drivers provided by the operating system. For remaining kernel-mode components, the company mandates stricter reliability standards.

DQI also emphasizes rigorous quality assessments covering power consumption, thermal impact, and overall performance. Furthermore, the initiative aims to clean up the Windows Update catalog by removing outdated or low-quality drivers, ensuring better lifecycle management for hardware support.
