Microsoft is reportedly developing a new hardware roadmap, with a handheld Xbox device expected around the 2027 holiday season. Additionally, the next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, is slated for a 2028 release. These details stem from internal documents cited by Fortune magazine.
The Project Helix initiative aims to establish a family of devices rather than a single console. CEO Sarah Sharma indicated that the platform will encompass various form factors. It remains uncertain if the handheld will be developed in-house or through partnerships similar to the existing collaboration with ASUS on the ROG Xbox Ally.
Microsoft has entered a multi-year strategic partnership with AMD to develop future gaming hardware. Future Xbox devices are expected to utilize AMD's next-generation processors and graphics architectures. Reports suggest that without hardware subsidies, the manufacturing cost and retail price of the next console could range from $1200 to $1800.
The company is also evaluating new models for the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. Potential changes include tiered options featuring ad-supported and ad-free versions, alongside independent add-ons for cloud gaming and multiplayer features. Microsoft is currently balancing user growth with profitability goals for the service.
