Microsoft has expanded its Copilot ecosystem by integrating Grok models from xAI, providing enterprise clients with a broader selection of third-party AI tools. This update follows the earlier addition of Anthropic’s Claude models, which were introduced to Copilot Studio in September 2025.

The integration process began with a preview of Grok 4.1 Fast for US organizations on February 19, 2026. The technical foundation for these deployments is Azure AI Foundry, a platform Microsoft announced in May 2025 to host various third-party AI models.

By incorporating multiple models, Microsoft aims to allow IT departments to select specific AI engines for different tasks within a single interface. However, the company noted that some xAI models operate on external infrastructure, which may impact data residency and governance compliance for corporate users.

This multi-model approach is designed to reduce Microsoft's reliance on any single AI provider. By diversifying its partnerships, the company seeks to mitigate risks related to vendor pricing, model performance, and potential partnership instability.
