Microsoft has introduced an automatic indexing feature for frequently accessed folders in Windows 11. This update is part of the optional KB5120998 release, which became available on August 27 for versions 24H2 and 25H2.
Previously, Windows Search relied on predefined locations. The new mechanism dynamically expands the search scope based on user activity, prioritizing files from folders that are opened often. This includes project directories and personal documents.
The feature is being rolled out in stages, meaning it may not be immediately available on all devices even after installing the update. Users can manage this functionality through the Settings menu under Privacy and Security, specifically via the Automatic search for other relevant locations option.
The system may also index large directories containing photos, videos, or virtual machine files. Microsoft advises users with lower-end hardware to disable the feature if they notice performance issues, as background indexing can increase system resource consumption.
