Microsoft has introduced a new feature allowing users to digitize their physical Xbox One game collections. This functionality relies on unique serial numbers embedded in discs, a technical implementation that has been in development for 15 years.
The initiative is part of Microsoft's broader game preservation strategy, which includes backward compatibility programs and bringing older titles to PC. Not all physical discs are compatible, as some early versions lack the necessary unique identifiers, and damaged media may also fail to register.
The rollout of this feature requires cooperation from game publishers to manage licensing and business requirements. While some publishers have already joined, the company notes that the process of achieving true digital ownership remains a complex, long-term challenge involving multiple industry stakeholders.
Microsoft's approach contrasts with the industry trend of moving away from physical media, as seen with Sony's plan to discontinue PlayStation discs by 2028. Microsoft continues to refine its digital ecosystem while maintaining a focus on preserving access to legacy gaming content.
