Microsoft has removed the Copilot+ PC branding from its latest Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models powered by Snapdragon processors. Brett Ostrum, corporate vice president of Microsoft Surface, confirmed that the change is intentional, though the devices still meet all technical criteria for the category.
The company maintains its focus on local AI processing and hybrid solutions. Kedar Kondap, senior vice president at Qualcomm, noted that the category was originally defined by specific standards, such as an NPU performance of 45 TOPS, which these new devices continue to support despite the name change.
The Copilot+ PC category was introduced by Microsoft and Qualcomm in 2024 to highlight AI-focused hardware. However, the brand faced significant challenges early on, particularly due to security concerns surrounding the Recall feature, which forced a delay in its release and a launch without the key function.
Over the past two years, the reputation of the Copilot+ PC brand has been impacted by these issues, leading many OEM partners to gradually remove the label from their marketing materials. Microsoft has now followed this trend by dropping the branding from its own new hardware lineup.
