Microsoft has officially removed the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool from Windows 11. The removal was implemented via the KB5124008 update, which brings the system build version to 26200.9445 or higher.
The decision to eliminate WMIC follows its deprecation announcement in May 2021. While the tool was previously available as an optional feature, it is no longer provided in the latest Windows 11 update, and users are advised to transition to officially supported alternatives.
Cybercriminals frequently exploited WMIC to facilitate ransomware attacks, including the deletion of Volume Shadow Copies to prevent data recovery. Notable malware families such as WannaCry, TeslaCrypt 4.1b, Serpent, and DeroHE utilized the tool to disable security features or bypass Windows Defender.
Although Microsoft provides a package to manually reinstall WMIC for legacy enterprise workflows, the company explicitly warns against this practice. Users are urged to avoid reinstallation unless strictly necessary for specific business processes, as it restores known security vulnerabilities.
