Microsoft has announced a significant change to its Android authentication application. Starting July 1, 2027, the Microsoft Authenticator app will transition its backup mechanism to Google One, moving away from the current Microsoft personal account-based system.

The shift begins in January 2027, when users will no longer be able to enable backups via their Microsoft personal accounts. Instead, users must configure the Microsoft Authenticator backup directly through the Google One service settings on their Android devices.

This update requires users to maintain both a Microsoft account for authentication services and a Google account for cloud storage. Backup data will count toward the user's Google account storage limit, which includes 15GB of free space provided by Google.

While authentication data typically requires minimal storage, users who have already exhausted their Google account quota may face issues saving new backups. The change applies to the Android version of the app, which supports personal, work, and school accounts.
