Microsoft is introducing a new management policy for its Edge browser, specifically designed for enterprise and educational environments. The feature, titled LaunchEdgeOnWindowsStartupEnabled, allows IT administrators to regulate the browser's behavior during the Windows system startup process.
Administrators can choose between three distinct configuration modes. They can force the browser to launch automatically upon user login, strictly disable the auto-start function, or leave the decision to the end user. This provides a more granular level of control over device management compared to previous iterations.
In scenarios where no specific policy is set, users retain the ability to toggle the auto-start feature within the Edge settings menu. Microsoft noted that the browser may occasionally suggest enabling this option, but the final choice remains with the user.
The company clarified that this new policy is separate from the existing Startup Boost mechanism. While Startup Boost focuses on background component preloading to improve launch times, the new policy specifically governs whether the browser window opens automatically upon login.
The feature is scheduled for release in upcoming versions of Microsoft Edge. By implementing these controls, Microsoft aims to balance the requirements of organizational device management with the need for individual user preferences.
