The Oversight Board has presented Meta with nine policy recommendations focused on deepfake removal, voting interference, and new moderation frameworks for generative AI. These proposals follow two incidents involving an AI-generated sexualized video on Instagram and deceptive content during the 2025 Israel-Iran conflict.
On June 23, the Board ordered the removal of an AI-generated video that impersonated a private individual, establishing that such content should be treated as non-consensual by default. This change would allow Meta to take action without requiring victims to report the abuse themselves.
Regarding the Israel-Iran conflict, the Board concluded that existing misinformation standards are insufficient for AI-generated media. They proposed a dedicated community standard for synthetic content, along with technical measures like 'High Risk' labels and provenance metadata for AI-generated outputs.
Meta is not legally obligated to implement these recommendations. Historically, the company has adopted approximately 74–75% of the Board's suggestions. Meta is expected to respond to the current report within 60 days, though the company has not yet committed to any of the nine points.
