Meta is reportedly exploring a partnership with Chinese startup Unitree Robotics to develop a humanoid robot prototype. While these discussions remain unverified, reports suggest the collaboration may center on software integration rather than joint hardware development.
The company initiated its robotics efforts in early 2025 within its Reality Labs division. A dedicated robotics group was established in February 2025 under the leadership of Marc Whitten, focusing on AI models, sensors, and software platforms rather than mass-producing proprietary hardware.
Meta aims to utilize its Llama AI model family to power consumer-facing robots. The company is also developing an internal project known as Metabot, which focuses on enhancing robotic dexterity and general functionality through advanced engineering.
In May 2026, Meta acquired the US-based startup Assured Robot Intelligence, known as ARI. The startup specializes in robotic AI foundation models for humanoid control. Following the acquisition, ARI co-founders Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang joined Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.
Meta’s strategy prioritizes AI software over capital-intensive hardware manufacturing to mitigate supply chain risks. The company has not announced a specific timeline for the release of consumer-facing robots, positioning the initiative as a long-term investment in AI.
