Meta has launched a research initiative providing five US universities with access to its latest AI models, direct collaboration with company researchers, and funding for selected projects. The participating institutions are the California Institute of Technology, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Louisiana State University, Indiana University, and UTHealth Houston.

The program focuses on the Muse family of models, including the Muse Spark Open, Muse Wonder, and Muse Spark series. Researchers also gain access to Muse Glimmer, a 30B open-weight model designed to operate on a single consumer-grade GPU. This allows academic teams to conduct experiments without the need for large-scale data center infrastructure.

The initiative aligns with the October 2026 launch of Prometheus, Meta’s new supercluster located in New Albany, Ohio, which utilizes hundreds of thousands of GPUs for training frontier-level models. The proximity of the supercluster to The Ohio State University College of Medicine highlights the program's strategic emphasis on health data science.

Meta aims to strengthen its position against competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic by fostering long-term engagement with the scientific community. The program serves as a talent pipeline, providing graduate students with early experience in Meta’s ecosystem while enabling the company to gather feedback on model performance in complex scientific applications.
