Matter Machine, a spinout from the University of Liverpool, has secured £4 million in a pre-Series A funding round. The startup focuses on AI-driven discovery of inorganic crystalline materials for batteries and catalysts.

Gordon Sanghera, the former CEO of Oxford Nanopore, joined the company on October 12. Sanghera led Oxford Nanopore for over 20 years, guiding it to a London Stock Exchange listing with a market value of £3.4 billion.

The company operates out of the University of Liverpool’s Materials Innovation Factory, an £81 million facility funded by Unilever. The new capital will support team expansion, platform development, and commercial outreach.

Matter Machine was founded by Matt Rosseinsky, a professor of inorganic chemistry. The company is the first investment made by Northern Gritstone in the Liverpool region. Northern Gritstone manages £382 million in capital across 51 portfolio companies.
