Wall Street experienced a sharp reversal on Monday, as a brief rally that added $700 billion in market value quickly evaporated. The S&P 500, which rose 1.1% during morning trading, closed down 0.5%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.1%, continuing a trend of selloffs in the artificial intelligence sector.
Market optimism was initially driven by a drop in oil prices to $104, fueled by hopes for US-Iran peace talks. Despite this, investors remain focused on the sustainability of massive AI spending by Big Tech companies. Concerns persist regarding whether these investments will generate sufficient returns.
Individual tech stocks saw significant volatility. Oracle shares dropped nearly 9% following the announcement of a $20 billion capital raise through stock and bond sales to support AI initiatives. Marvell shares fell by almost 13% amid reports of its $115 billion acquisition of Lumentum.
Kevin Hassett, an economic adviser at the White House, stated that the current ecosystem contains sufficient cash to support AI development, dismissing fears of a financing crisis. Meanwhile, nearly 70% of S&P 500 companies ended the trading day in positive territory, despite the weakness in major tech stocks.
Market participants are now looking toward upcoming US midterm elections and the jobs report scheduled for Friday. Confidence in the AI sector remains fragile as investors weigh the long-term viability of current capital expenditure levels against recent market performance.
