MapQuest has introduced a new Surveillance Layer that allows users to view the locations and orientations of automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras. The feature displays devices from various manufacturers, including Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions, Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo, Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia, and Verkada.

The functionality provides users with the ability to identify camera placements and their viewing directions. While the origin of the data remains undisclosed, the tool enables individuals to potentially navigate around areas monitored by these surveillance systems. The feature is accessible through the map options menu within the application.

The deployment of ALPR technology remains a subject of public debate regarding privacy concerns and potential misuse by law enforcement. Some municipalities have begun removing these systems following resident complaints. The new MapQuest tool mirrors previous efforts by security researchers to map surveillance infrastructure.
