Researchers at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) have introduced WiFireNet, an artificial intelligence system designed to detect concealed handguns using standard Wi-Fi signals. The technology functions as an alternative to conventional metal detectors and video surveillance equipment.
The system operates by analyzing Channel State Information (CSI). As Wi-Fi radio signals interact with objects, they reflect and pass through them. The resulting signal variations are influenced by the specific shape and material of the object, which the AI model then processes to identify potential weapons.
The hardware setup includes a Wi-Fi transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates the signal, while the receiver captures the data for the Wi-FiNet algorithm to interpret. This method eliminates the need for individuals to pass through physical security gates or be captured on camera.
This project builds upon existing research into utilizing wireless networks for object detection and human presence recognition. Previous studies have demonstrated that standard Wi-Fi router signals can identify individuals with high accuracy, a concept that WiFireNet now adapts for security applications.
