Ram Ahluwalia, CEO of Lumida Wealth, advises investors to shift capital from traditional bonds toward utility and financial stocks. He argues that rising long-term interest rates, driven by government borrowing and infrastructure spending, make standard fixed-income assets less attractive for portfolio protection.
Utilities are highlighted as low-leverage alternatives to bonds. These companies provide stable cash flows and are increasingly integrated into AI infrastructure, as training large language models requires significant electricity. This combination offers both income stability and growth potential.
Financial sector stocks are also favored due to expanding net interest margins in a high-rate environment. Additionally, Ahluwalia notes a recovery in capital markets, specifically a resurgence in IPO activity, which increases fee income for banks through advisory and underwriting services.
The strategy challenges conventional asset allocation by suggesting that equities with bond-like characteristics—such as low debt and predictable revenue—should replace traditional bonds in a regime of sustained high interest rates.
