A viral video depicting maintenance workers cleaning the ears and nose of the Leshan Giant Buddha has been debunked by the site's management committee. The footage showed workers removing debris and pigeons, accompanied by a monkey stealing a helmet. Officials confirmed the video was created using artificial intelligence and does not represent real events.

Chen Rui, deputy director of the digital information center at the Leshan Giant Buddha Cultural Relics Protection Committee, stated that the site has undergone five maintenance sessions since 2026. The most recent work took place from September 20 to 25 and focused on repairing surface micro-damage and removing vegetation. Officials clarified that there are no monkeys in the Lingyun Mountain area.

The committee emphasized that the Buddha's ears and nose contain no debris requiring removal. Under Chinese regulations, including the Internet Information Service Deep Synthesis Management Provisions, AI-generated content must be clearly labeled to prevent public deception. Spreading false information about cultural relics is prohibited by national laws, with potential penalties including detention and fines.
