Kroger plans to reduce its corporate workforce by approximately 3,000 positions over the next three years. The company expects to complete these cuts by 2029, as announced by CEO Greg Foran on October 12, 2026.
The restructuring aims to simplify operations and eliminate redundancies through the implementation of artificial intelligence. The company intends to use the resulting savings to support lower prices for customers and redirect resources to frontline store staff.
The layoffs will likely affect employees in major corporate hubs, including Cincinnati, Charlotte, and Portland. Kroger currently employs roughly 8,200 people in its corporate offices, representing a reduction of about 37% of that workforce.
This initiative follows a previous reduction of approximately 1,000 corporate roles in mid-2025. The company is currently facing increased competition from retailers such as Walmart, Aldi, Costco, and Amazon, while also dealing with a lowered full-year sales target.
