Kalshi Klear, the clearinghouse arm of prediction market platform Kalshi, filed a request with the CFTC on September 22 to introduce margin trading for event contracts. Currently, these contracts require full collateralization, meaning traders must commit the total amount upfront. The proposed change would allow eligible participants to take larger positions with less initial capital.
The company plans a limited rollout of the feature. Margin trading would be restricted to self-clearing members who meet specific capital requirements. Additionally, Kalshi intends to exclude sports, culture, and mention contracts from this offering. The proposal also includes a mechanism to increase capital requirements as contracts approach their expiration dates.
Kalshi is targeting institutional investors who are accustomed to margin usage in traditional stock and futures markets. The platform aims to make longer-dated contracts more attractive for hedging purposes. This shift is part of a broader strategy to expand institutional presence and reduce reliance on retail sports betting, which has faced scrutiny from state gaming authorities.
The platform has been actively building infrastructure for institutional clients, including partnerships with Tradeweb and FIS. In May, Kalshi reported that institutional trading volume grew by more than 800% over the previous six months. Despite this growth, industry figures like Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster and Aptus Capital Advisors' Brian Jacobs have noted potential limitations regarding client interest and transaction costs.
