Prediction market operator Kalshi has introduced a perpetual futures contract linked to the US 500 index. This index tracks 500 of the largest US companies weighted by market capitalization, allowing traders to open leveraged long or short positions.
Unlike traditional futures, these perpetual contracts have no fixed expiration date. To maintain price alignment with the underlying index, the platform utilizes periodic funding payments between long and short traders.
The company submitted its filing for this product to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in August. CEO Tarek Mansour stated that this move is part of the firm's strategy to evolve into a full-service financial exchange.
This launch represents a shift for Kalshi, which previously focused on event contracts related to elections and sports. The firm is also reportedly preparing to file for a perpetual contract tracking West Texas Intermediate crude oil.
