South Korean financial firms Kakao Pay and KakaoBank have entered into a memorandum of understanding with crypto infrastructure provider Fireblocks. The partnership focuses on exploring digital asset opportunities, with a specific emphasis on developing infrastructure for stablecoins.
The companies plan to conduct proof-of-concept tests to evaluate digital asset infrastructure that aligns with South Korean regulatory, security, and service standards. This initiative is intended to support the creation of secure onchain infrastructure for the local digital asset market.
No specific timeline for implementation, investment, or product launches was provided in the announcement. Kakao Pay manages mobile payments, while KakaoBank operates as a major internet-only bank. Their partner, Fireblocks, currently serves over 2,500 institutions, including more than 100 banks.
This agreement follows a previous memorandum signed by Kakao Group and stablecoin issuer Circle in July. That collaboration focused on blockchain-based payment systems and won-denominated stablecoins. Other South Korean firms, such as KB Financial Group and Toss, are also actively testing stablecoin pilots and payment infrastructure.
