JPMorgan Chase has secured the top position in the 2026 Evident AI Index for the fifth consecutive year. The ranking evaluates 50 major global banks based on their AI maturity across categories such as talent, innovation, leadership, and transparency, utilizing over 70 indicators.

North American institutions dominate the top ten, accounting for eight spots, while UBS is the sole European bank represented. JPMorgan’s leadership is attributed to its proprietary large language models and strong performance in innovation and transparency metrics.

The bank now estimates its annual AI-driven financial benefits at approximately $2 billion, an increase from its previous forecast of $1–1.5 billion. Currently, 12 out of 50 evaluated banks report or project returns on their AI initiatives, compared to eight in the prior year.

The industry shows a sharp acceleration in AI deployment, with capabilities advancing nearly three times faster over the past year than the previous three-year average. Institutions are also prioritizing oversight, as recruitment for AI governance talent grew by 33% year-over-year.

A significant investment gap exists regarding safety and control systems. While 80% of top-tier banks are investing heavily in AI governance controls, only 40% of their peers are doing the same. Most institutions in the index have yet to report specific AI-related returns.
