Jeff Dean, the former chief scientist at Google, has launched a new AI startup called Discovery Loop. He co-founded the company alongside former Google colleagues Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals, all of whom resigned on August 5, 2026. The founders previously contributed to key Google infrastructure, including MapReduce, Bigtable, Google Brain, and DeepMind.

Discovery Loop aims to automate scientific and engineering discovery by using AI to conduct thousands of parallel experiments. The startup is currently in talks to raise funding at a valuation of $50 billion. This figure represents a significant increase from the valuation of roughly $10 billion that the company sought just weeks prior.

The initial funding round for Discovery Loop was co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital. Khosla Ventures has previously earmarked approximately $3 billion for early-stage, researcher-led companies, reflecting a broader market trend where investors prioritize the pedigree of founders.

The current AI funding landscape shows high valuations for startups led by former researchers. For instance, Safe Superintelligence reached a valuation of $32 billion, while Thinking Machines Lab is reportedly in discussions for a $40 billion valuation. Discovery Loop's target valuation highlights investor willingness to back experienced teams before commercial products are released.
