The Italian Competition Authority has launched an investigation into the AI music startup Suno. Regulators are scrutinizing the company's service terms, which they claim may create an unfair imbalance between user rights and company obligations.
The investigation focuses on clauses that grant Suno broad discretion to unilaterally modify contract terms, service features, and subscription fees without providing justification. Authorities also noted that the platform requires users to grant overly broad licensing rights.
Concerns were raised regarding provisions that force users to waive moral rights to their work, which may conflict with Italian copyright law. Additionally, the terms mandate that all disputes be resolved through arbitration in Massachusetts, USA, while explicitly prohibiting class-action lawsuits.
In the coming weeks, the Italian regulator will initiate a consultation process to address these issues. Relevant industry associations, chambers of commerce, and consumer protection organizations are expected to participate in the upcoming discussions.
