The International Organization for Standardization (ISO/IEC) has officially released the international standard for brain-computer interface (BCI) reference architecture, which was led by Chinese experts. The development involved collaboration with specialists from Italy, South Korea, the UK, India, the US, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Australia, and Germany.
The new standard addresses four core aspects: definition, usage, functionality, and implementation. It establishes a comprehensive technical framework that covers conceptual, application, and functional layers. This structure aims to resolve inconsistencies in system composition and implementation methods across various BCI technical paths and use cases.
The framework serves as a unified technical reference for product development, system design, and future standardization of data, interfaces, and testing protocols. It is intended to support the large-scale and standardized development of the BCI industry as the technology transitions from research to medical, industrial, and consumer applications.
Additionally, nine government departments, including the Ministry of Commerce, have issued guidelines to accelerate the commercialization of frontier technologies like BCI and embodied intelligence. In September, the National Medical Products Administration approved China's third BCI medical device standard, which focuses on AI-based EEG data processing and takes effect on September 1, 2025.
