Intel has published a patent detailing the integration of Micro LED technology directly into CPU packaging. The design utilizes a glass substrate and through-glass via (TGV) technology to connect Micro LED beads to the semiconductor die, allowing the processor to display custom light effects, logos, or text.

According to the patent, the Micro LEDs are powered and controlled directly by the CPU core. This enables the lighting to react in real-time to processor load, temperature, or specific execution states. The structure incorporates two layers of silicon nitride combined with a glass substrate to facilitate these complex electrical connections.

Intel notes that the glass substrate offers approximately 10 times higher interconnect density compared to traditional organic substrates. While the company has been actively researching glass substrate technology, this specific Micro LED implementation remains in the patent stage and has not entered mass production.

The patent was originally submitted in 2022 and officially disclosed this month. Intel has not provided details on how these visual elements would remain visible once a standard cooling solution is installed over the processor, leaving the practical application of the design to be determined in future developments.
