Microsoft has officially declined to integrate an SFTP browser into Windows Terminal, rejecting pull request #20736. The maintainers stated that the project is strictly a terminal emulator and does not intend to expand into file management features.
Despite the official refusal, an independent developer has created a functional SFTP browser fork. The implementation uses the libssh2 library and allows users to view, create, delete, download, and upload files, as well as open them in VSCode.
The browser runs as a separate terminal tab, accessible via the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut or the command palette. Profile management is handled through a configuration file, while passwords are secured using the DPAPI CryptProtectData method.
The developer utilized the OpenCode tool with the Zen model to generate the logic for the browser. The development process, including analysis, coding, and testing, took approximately six days to complete.
The source code for the project is publicly available, and compiled versions can be downloaded from the repository's release page for immediate use.
