Hyundai and Kia have partnered with LG Energy Solution to launch a pilot project in South Korea. The initiative tests the use of decommissioned battery packs from electric vehicles built on the E-GMP platform as stationary energy storage systems.

The pilot system is located at the Wonik PNE plant in Dongtan, Hwaseong. It features a storage capacity of 200 kWh and is connected to DC fast chargers. The setup stores energy during off-peak hours when electricity costs are lower to support charging during peak demand.

LG Energy Solution is responsible for manufacturing the storage systems and providing battery diagnostics. Hyundai Engineering is assessing commercial viability and infrastructure integration, while Wonik PNE manages technical verification and system operations.

The partners will evaluate key performance metrics, including charging and discharging control algorithms, safety, reliability, and battery degradation. The project aims to establish a sustainable business model for a circular battery economy.
