A 16-year-old hiker, Bryce Vincent Gowryluk, required rescue by helicopter after becoming stranded on Crown Mountain in Canada. The incident occurred on October 3 after the teenager attempted to follow a route suggested by the Claude chatbot.
Gowryluk intended to hike from Grouse Mountain to Crown Mountain and back, a trip estimated to take eight hours. He used Claude to plan a new route, but confused the steep Widowmaker Arete, which requires climbing gear, with the Crown Couloir he originally intended to traverse.
After climbing a section of the mountain, the hiker found himself trapped on a five-foot-wide ledge. He contacted his mother, who alerted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The North Shore Rescue team subsequently deployed a helicopter to extract him from the site.
The hiker also utilized Google Maps and AllTrails during his planning process. Despite the outcome, Gowryluk stated he does not blame the AI and accepts responsibility for his route choice. Paul Markey of North Shore Rescue noted that AI lacks real-world terrain knowledge and cannot replace human experience.
