The production of high-end CD players from PS Audio and Naim has been halted due to a shortage of optical drive components. PS Audio CEO Paul McGowan confirmed that the company cannot manufacture its own optical readers, as its expertise is focused on electronics and software development.
The supply crisis originated in June 2024 when D&M Holdings, the parent company of Denon and Marantz, announced it would stop accepting orders for its SACD/CD mechanisms. This forced PS Audio to purchase the final remaining inventory from Marantz, while component costs doubled due to high demand from other manufacturers.
Naim faced similar challenges with its Uniti Star Streaming Amplifier. The company attempted to source alternative optical drives, but encountered technical difficulties. Integrating a new drive requires significant modifications, including new control codes and mechanical adjustments, and the potential alternative supplier also ceased production.
While new units from PS Audio and Naim are currently out of stock, both companies have confirmed they maintain a supply of components for repair purposes. This ensures that existing owners of these high-end audio systems can continue to service their devices despite the discontinuation of the original optical drive assemblies.
