Munich-based military AI firm Helsing has introduced Contra, an AI-powered missile defense system designed to counter jet-powered drones and cruise missiles. The system integrates existing sensors and effectors into a unified network, allowing for the autonomous engagement of multiple aerial threats simultaneously. It is built on the company's Altra C2 platform, which maintains human oversight over decision-making.

The system includes two new interceptor missiles, AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush, which feature jet and rocket propulsion and all-weather radar seekers. These interceptors are designed for mass production at Helsing's Resilience Factories with a focus on cost-efficiency. Contra is also compatible with third-party hardware, including lasers, guns, and net-based systems.

The development comes amid a surge in European defense technology investment. In 2026, the sector saw significant funding rounds, including €30 million for Frankenburg Technologies, €20 million for INLEAP Photonics, and €12 million for Six Robotics. Total regional investment reached nearly €1.07 billion, largely driven by a €1 billion Series D round for Quantum Systems.

Helsing, founded in 2021, developed this technology in response to reports of increased production of Russian Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet drones, which have reached 4,000 units per month. The company states that the Contra system provides autonomous fire superiority at altitudes of up to ten kilometers, addressing the need for scalable and affordable defense solutions.
