The German AI research startup Grubel has secured €3 million in a funding round led by Point Nine. The investment round included participation from angel investors such as Google's former chief scientist Jeff Dean, Together AI co-founder Chris Ré, Databricks co-founder Ion Stoica, and Harvey co-founders Gabe Pereyra and Winston Weinberg.
Founded in 2026 by Moritz Hardt and Reinhard Heckel, the company focuses on automating the AI specialization process for complex legal tasks. The founders bring academic and research backgrounds from the Max Planck Institute, UC Berkeley, Google Brain, and IBM Research.
Grubel aims to address the reliance on manual labor in legal services by developing a system that adapts to individual legal matters. The company's technology consists of a data engine for curating task-relevant information, a test-time adaptation layer, and a continual evaluation framework.
The startup plans to allocate the newly raised capital toward research, product development, and expanding its team. Initial evaluations indicate that the company's specialization loop can outperform general-purpose AI models on specific legal tasks, with future goals including the use of smaller, more efficient models for routine work.
