Green SM launched its ride-hailing operations in Los Angeles on October 13, deploying a fleet of 500 VinFast VF8 electric SUVs. Unlike competitors Uber and Lyft, which rely on independent contractors, Green SM owns its vehicles and employs all drivers directly as full-time staff members.
The company provides all maintenance, training, and equipment for its employees. Drivers follow structured shifts rather than choosing their own hours. The service area currently covers Los Angeles County and extends into Orange County, with plans to include airport transfers.
Globally, the company reports having completed approximately 850 million rides. Following its initial 2023 launch in Vietnam, the business has expanded across Asia and Europe. Los Angeles serves as the company's first entry point into the United States market.
Customers can request rides via the Green SM app, a telephone hotline, or by hailing a vehicle on the street. Pricing is determined by time and distance, with initial costs comparable to Uber Comfort. New users receive a 50 percent discount on their first five trips, capped at $12 per ride.
The company also offers a Green Pass membership, providing 10 monthly vouchers for 30 percent off, up to $10 per ride. Green SM intends to continue recruiting and training additional local drivers in Los Angeles to meet demand as it competes with existing services like Waymo.
