Google has launched Playground, a web-based platform that enables users to generate playable video games using text descriptions without writing code. The tool allows creators to refine game mechanics, physics, and settings through natural language prompts. Users can share their creations via links or publish them to a community gallery, where content undergoes safety screening.
The platform is currently available to users in the United States aged 18 and older. Access to creation features is tiered based on the user's Google AI subscription. Games generated on the platform are playable in web browsers on both mobile devices and laptops, with some genres supporting multiplayer modes and leaderboards.
Google plans to integrate Unity Spark into Playground later this year to provide professional-level mechanics and 3D capabilities. This move follows previous developments in generative AI for gaming, such as DeepMind's Genie model, which was introduced in 2024 and trained on over 200,000 hours of gameplay video to create 2D platformers.
Following the announcement, shares of gaming companies experienced a decline, with Unity closing down approximately 24%. Investors expressed concerns regarding the potential for AI tools to displace traditional game development software. Other platforms, such as Roblox, have also previously announced initiatives to incorporate text-to-creation features for users.
