Starting December 1, 2026, Google will launch its Android Registered App Stores program for international markets. The initiative allows third-party app stores to offer users a streamlined installation experience, including single-click installs and silent background updates, mirroring the functionality currently available through the Google Play Store.

Participation in the program requires an annual fee of $10,000, which must be paid prior to the application review process. Google may impose additional charges if security audits reveal malware issues within a store. The program is specifically designed for regions outside of the United States and Europe.

Technical requirements for the new service are strict, as the program will only function on devices running Android 17. Google states that support begins with the Android 17 QPR2 build, which is expected to reach Pixel devices shortly. The company plans to roll out the program across dozens of nations globally.

The program originated as a response to legal requirements following the verdict by Judge James Donato. While Google initially proposed the Registered App Stores concept as a broader settlement, the initiative will not be supported in the US. Currently, Aptoide is the only third-party store listed for the US market via Google Play.
