Google has launched a registration program for third-party Android app stores, allowing them to adopt a streamlined installation and update process. This initiative aims to match the user experience of the Google Play Store by enabling one-tap installations and background updates without repetitive system prompts.
The program stems from a settlement between Google and Epic Games reached last year. Participation is voluntary, and registered stores will gain access to features such as progress indicators, developer support, and the Android Developer ID API. These changes are scheduled to take effect on December 1.
The new functionality is available for users on Android 17 QPR2 and later versions outside the United States. Stores that choose not to register will continue to operate under the existing installation protocols. Google plans to expand the program to the US once the court finalizes the settlement.
Participating developers are required to pay an annual registration fee to cover operational support and new tools. Google noted that additional fees may be charged for content verification if a store exceeds a specific threshold for malicious software within its catalog.
