Google has officially launched a native Gemini desktop application for Windows, moving its AI assistant beyond web browsers. The app is available for download via the Microsoft Store and Google's official channels, targeting users on Windows 10 and newer versions.
The application features a floating interface accessible via global keyboard shortcuts, allowing users to interact with Gemini without switching windows. It supports multimodal input, enabling users to drag and drop local files, PDFs, code snippets, and images directly into the chat for analysis.
The client integrates Gemini Live for real-time, low-latency voice interaction. It also includes screen-context awareness, allowing the AI to interpret active windows, charts, or error codes, with results easily transferable to productivity software like Word or Excel.
Google optimized the application for both x86 and ARM architectures to minimize CPU and memory usage. This ensures the app runs efficiently in the background without impacting system performance or battery life on laptops.
The release serves as a strategic move to compete with Microsoft Copilot and the ChatGPT desktop client. By providing a native experience, Google aims to retain its user base and integrate its AI services directly into the Windows desktop workflow.
