Google has launched Playground, a browser-based platform that enables users to create games using natural language text prompts. The service is currently available only in the United States for users aged 18 and older. It aims to lower barriers to game development by eliminating the need for traditional programming skills.
The platform allows creators to modify game physics, rules, characters, and environments through a conversational interface. Users can test their projects instantly and share them via links or publish them to the Playground Explore gallery. Some game genres will include multiplayer support and leaderboards, with the gallery featuring content based on player activity and ratings.
Playground is free to use, though Google One subscribers receive increased weekly token limits. The service is powered by Google’s AI models, including Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria, integrated with a custom-developed optimization layer. The company developed this layer using internal game data and testing results.
Additionally, Google and Unity have announced Unity Spark, an AI-driven game development tool designed for more professional workflows and collaborative creation. Games built with Unity Spark can be published directly to the Playground platform. A closed beta for Unity Spark is scheduled to begin before the end of the year, with a waitlist currently open.
