Google is launching an enhanced protection setting for Google Messages, which utilizes cloud-based Gemini AI models to analyze conversations with unknown senders. This feature aims to detect sophisticated fraud attempts that on-device tools might miss. Data processed in the cloud remains encrypted and inaccessible to Google or third parties.
The new mode also incorporates on-device Gemini Nano AI to scan URLs from unfamiliar sources in real time. It checks these links for malicious signals before the user opens them. This opt-in feature complements existing security measures by providing an additional layer of verification for incoming messages.
Beyond messaging, Google is introducing system-wide security updates. These include blocking apps from enabling call forwarding and alerting users to such attempts. Additionally, the system will automatically hide sensitive information during screen-sharing sessions in Chrome and Android WebView.
The company is expanding its scam detection for chat notifications, which debuted on Pixel devices last year. This functionality will now reach smartphones from Honor, Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Google expects to provide these tools to hundreds of millions of users by the end of the year.
