Robert O'Callahan, a former employee of Google DeepMind, has resigned from the company. He stated that his team was focused on developing chips designed to increase the speed and reduce the costs of AI operations. O'Callahan expressed concerns that the current pace of artificial intelligence development is excessively fast.

In his resignation letter, O'Callahan noted that he could not ignore the potential consequences of his work, citing his Christian faith as a factor in his decision. He emphasized that while he does not believe an AI superintelligence apocalypse is inevitable, the inherent risks are significant enough to warrant serious concern and moral caution.

O'Callahan argued that pursuing artificial intelligence at the current speed is inherently irresponsible. He rejected the notion that employees raising safety concerns are merely trying to manipulate stock prices or influence regulations to suppress competition, asserting that these warnings are sincere.

The departure of O'Callahan follows similar exits within the industry. Earlier this month, Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic due to fears regarding uncontrollable technology. Additionally, former Google DeepMind researcher Bilal Chughtai left the company this summer, citing concerns about the limited time available to prevent potential AI-related harm.
