Google has introduced a new integration for its Home ecosystem using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This standardized framework allows third-party AI agents to access, control, and analyze connected smart home devices, including thermostats, lights, and cameras.

Supported AI agents now include Anthropic’s Claude, Open Claw, Hermes, and Google’s Antigravity tools. The integration also extends to development environments such as Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot via VS Code.

The MCP server provides a search_documents tool for documentation retrieval. While testing can be performed without authentication, production environments require Google Cloud API key authentication. Independent developers are also creating their own MCP servers using the Smart Device Management API.

The system bridges the Google Home ecosystem with Matter and Thread connectivity standards. Google plans to expand these capabilities through 2025 and 2026, with a roadmap that includes camera intelligence and proactive automation features.
