Google has officially released the stable version of the Chrome 156 browser, which is currently being rolled out to users on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. The desktop version is identified as 156.0.8078.47, with some users on Windows and Mac receiving version 156.0.8078.48.
A significant technical change in this release is the migration of the IndexedDB implementation to a SQLite backend. This update replaces the previous architecture that combined LevelDB with flat files. Google states that while the API remains unchanged for developers, this transition is intended to improve overall reliability and performance.
For web developers, Chrome 156 introduces the CSS random() function, allowing for the generation of random values directly within stylesheets. Additionally, the browser now enables developers to manually retry failed module loads using the import() function, which aims to improve web availability in unstable network conditions.
The security update included in this release addresses 353 vulnerabilities. Among these fixes, Google identified and resolved 6 critical security flaws.
