Google has updated its Gemini chatbot to allow users to generate, preview, and edit files directly within the chat interface. The feature, announced on October 29, 2026, supports seven file formats: PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code.
Users can modify files through three methods: manual editing in full-screen mode, highlighting specific text to request changes, or sending follow-up instructions within the conversation thread. This update eliminates the need to download files to external applications for revisions.
The rollout is immediate for Gemini users in supported regions and languages. However, platform limitations apply: while PDF editing is available on both web and mobile, editing for other formats like Docs and code is currently restricted to the web version.
This release follows previous integrations in 2026. In March, Google added Gemini tools to Workspace apps, and on April 29, 2026, the company introduced the ability to generate and download files directly from the chatbot.
