Geely has officially launched the Galaxy Xingyao 6 EF, marketed as the world's first production methanol hybrid family sedan. The vehicle utilizes a plug-in hybrid powertrain that integrates a 1.5-liter methanol engine with an electric motor and a lithium iron phosphate battery. The system allows for any blend of methanol and gasoline in a single tank, with a sensor adjusting engine parameters in real time.
The sedan is built on Geely's Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture and features a thermal efficiency of 48.15% for its methanol engine. The vehicle supports cold starts at temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius. In terms of range, the model offers up to 230 km on electric power alone, with a maximum combined range of 1,880 km when using a full gasoline tank and a fully charged battery.
The Xingyao 6 EF is available in three variants with limited-time pricing between ¥76,800 and ¥96,800. Official guide prices range from ¥86,800 to ¥106,800. The model has already seen deployment in commercial sectors, with over 6,000 units currently in use for taxi and ride-hailing services. Geely has been developing methanol technology since 2005.
The launch follows strong performance for the Galaxy sub-brand, which sold 153,385 vehicles in October 2026, marking a 20.32% year-on-year increase. Total sales for the brand reached over 1 million vehicles in the first ten months of the year. Currently, there are more than 1,400 methanol refueling stations operating across China to support the growing infrastructure.
