The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is allocating $100 million to develop AI-powered agricultural tools for smallholder farmers. This investment is part of a larger $1 billion initiative for equitable AI access, announced on September 14, 2026.

The project, developed in partnership with Google, aims to provide localized advice on soil analysis, weather patterns, and crop management. The systems are designed for accessibility via voice and chat interfaces, functioning without requiring high literacy levels or advanced smartphones.

Google has already deployed its agricultural AI models across 140 million hectares in India and six African countries. Additionally, the spinoff Heritable Agriculture received a $4.98 million grant in January 2026 to focus on climate-resilient crop breeding.

The broader $1 billion commitment includes allocations for education and health at 40%, and digital infrastructure at 10%. The agricultural segment accounts for 10% of the total fund, targeting regions in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia where farmers produce one-third of the world's food.
