The open-source project FX Steam Launcher encapsulates the SteamOS environment into a standalone application for macOS. This tool allows users to launch Steam and run Windows games directly on Mac hardware without complex configurations.

For DirectX compatibility, the launcher utilizes two methods. It uses the SteamOS Proton layer to convert DirectX 12 to Vulkan and then to Apple Metal. For older DirectX 10 and 11 titles, it employs the experimental DXMT project to translate calls directly to Metal.

The software supports peripherals including keyboards, mice, and game controllers. Users can allocate CPU and memory resources manually, and the tool integrates with the native Metal Performance HUD for monitoring system metrics.

Performance tests conducted by ETA Prime on a Mac mini with an M4 Max chip showed the software running The Witcher 3 at 1080P resolution with high settings at approximately 70 FPS. Stellar Blade achieved 70 FPS at 800P resolution.
