FunnyPlaying has introduced the FPBG Mini, a handheld gaming device designed to mimic the classic Game Boy Color. Unlike software-based emulators, the device utilizes FPGA hardware architecture to replicate original hardware logic, aiming to provide a more authentic gaming experience in terms of compatibility and input response.
The FPBG Mini features a compact form factor that retains the traditional button layout of the original handheld. A key feature is its native support for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color game cartridges, allowing users to play physical media directly without the need for ROM files or software emulation.
The device incorporates modern hardware upgrades, including a high-brightness display panel and a built-in rechargeable battery with a USB-C charging port. These additions replace the need for traditional AA batteries and improve visual clarity compared to the original 1990s hardware.
By launching the FPBG Mini, FunnyPlaying aims to lower the entry barrier for FPGA-based gaming, positioning the device as a more accessible alternative to high-end enthusiast products like the Analogue Pocket. This release marks a strategic expansion for the company, which previously focused on aftermarket modifications and accessories.
